Tom and I have promised to visit Jack and Annie for many years. With Duluth as a starting point for our trip to the Northwest and a quick jump to Route 2, it seemed like a perfect time to see their home town. We stayed at the Lakehead Basin Marina. The marina was located at Lake Superior and the St. Louis River. The Aerial Lift Bridge was the view from the unit.
The bridge separates the Point section of Duluth from downtown Duluth. It raises as ships and boats pass through the channel from the St. Louis River to Lake Superior. It is necessary to plan extra time when heading that way or you may get "bridged" as the locals would say! Delays could be ten minutes to an hour depending on the size of the boat or ship. Some of the freighters are a 1,000 feet. We were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the ships' horns and horn signals from the bridge attendants.
Now this is a lazy Sunday afternoon...a bit hot...90 degrees!

There are many walking and biking trails in Duluth.
Watching the big ships pass through the Aerial Lift Bridge.
Wow...it's like threading a needle. Here you can see the road and pedestrian walk that lifts to the top of the bridge as the ships pass.

Hilly Duluth
What a beautiful city! We had no idea it was so hilly and surrounded by so much water.
